If you happen to be a pantster when it comes to writing, STOP READING!! Unless you are curious to find out why starting and finishing your novel just got easier.
But if, like me, you need some structure and organisation in your writing then carry on reading. It’s no secret I am a big fan of K.M. Weiland. I have at least two of her books in Outlining Your Novel: Map Your Way to Success (Helping Writers Become Authors Book 1) and Creating Character Arcs: The Masterful Author’s Guide to Uniting Story Structure, Plot, and Character Development (Helping Writers Become Authors Book 7).
Though these books are written with the novel in mind, I used the first named for my bestselling memoir to help me with structure and dialogue. I am using the material in both books for my WIP, a debut novel. They are invaluable. You see, I had the ideas for the books in my head but in truth I hadn’t got a clue how to write them. That was until I found K.M. Weiland. She is a novelist and shows how to write a novel in an informative and user-friendly way.
Now for the really good news! She has collaborated with a geek (her word not mine) to produce a software program that encompasses all that is within her books.
This is what she had to say about the program:
I have long been a proponent of outlining, through my many resources both on the Helping Writers Become Authors website and via my books Outlining Your Novel and the Outlining Your Novel Workbook. Hundreds of you have written to tell me you’ve found the workbook an invaluable tool, both as a guided process in helping you brainstorm all the most important parts of your stories, and in giving you a place to actually write out and organize your notes.
But what happens when you need to transcribe your notes to the computer—or you begin a new book and need to start the workbook process all over again?
What if you had a computer program for that? One that would let you do all the exercises and answer all the questions (and more) from the paperback workbook—and then transport your scene lists to Word or Scrivener—and then let you start all over again for your next book?
I can tell you what my answer is: Bring it on! It’s perfect in that it has all the features and guidance contained within her book but now with this program one can see at a glance the whole structure of the novel on your screen. I was using an app from Amazon Studios to do that as a kind of storyboard; like one Hollywood scriptwriters use. Now, I can do that within this brilliant new program.
Okay, I have now “test driven” it and it truly is fantastic. I will write a full review of the program in due course but first must get my novel finished!
One tip – you may find it easier to use the program if you first read K.M. Weiland’s book Structuring Your Novel: Essential Keys for Writing an Outstanding Story . I know I did.
This is the Amazon blurb about the new program:
- Outline – Create a story with a solid Three-Act plot structure and perfect scene structure.
- Premise – Easy fill-in-the-blanks give you a perfect elevator pitch every time.
- General Sketches – Brainstorm the big picture of your scene list, character arcs, and theme.
- Character – Get to know your characters with an extensive character interview, featuring 100+ questions.
- Settings – Keep track of your settings, explore your best options, and answer helpful world-building questions.
So, click through to Amazon and check it out here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Talk about serendipity!
By Briochegalon May 30, 2017
This morning I started to work in my outline for my WIP that is stalled because I didn’t take the time to outline before I started. Anyway, I had literally begun working through the steps in Weiland’s two outline books (both of which are terrific) and was trying to figure out how to pull it all together. Write it all out by hand? Document the info on my note taking app? Then I received the info about this software which is based on Weiland’s outlining books. Seriously, the moment I’m working through the workbook, this software is announced. Well, the heavens opened and the angels sang. It couldn’t have come at a better time. So I downloaded it immediately and so far it’s terrific, just what I needed. I’ve entered the Characters and Settings sections. It is focused on outlining, listing your characters, settings etc. so there isn’t a lot of unnecessary stuff. I had tried other writing software which was way too complex, this is very easy to use and straightforward. So far I love it. I’ll post updates as I progress through the steps.

I was excited yesterday when I received the email informing me about this new software based on K. M. Weiland Outlining Workbook. I immediately grabbed a copy. I have been having fun exploring it. There is a sample project already there for you to look out and explore. It is definitely comprehensive covering everything in the workbook. I will be outlining one my series projects using it as I am working on developing better writing habits. This will help me focus and narrow my thought process as I fill in information. I own all Wieland’s books about writing fiction. She is an author I buy, if she writes it I buy it. I have about 3 authors I feel this strongly about their work about how to write, publishing and such things. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Endless reasons to buy!
By Nicole M.on May 19, 2017
This program is so handy! My hands used to cramp from having to write on paper, so I switched to a computer document, but then I had no way to organize my thoughts without endless scrolling and searching. With this program – not only does it walk you through every step of writing a novel –
it’s incredibly easy to organize, re-organize, keep, and delete throughout your progress! Plus, but you can use it for multiple projects at once – no need to buy workbooks over and over again! With this program, I’ve already made progress on a long-term project that I’d almost given up on. The author asks you questions that help you see your characters and plots in ways that I’d never considered before. In my first few days of use, I worked out a complicated problem with my plot that had previously stumped me. I have no end of good things to say about this product!

5.0 out of 5 stars It’s great … with a couple of small caveats, after that it’s all golden.

Two warnings: 1) Only works on 64-bit computers 2) After download the computer shows an ‘unknown publisher’ warning. Just click Open Anyway, and then it opens and works fine.
One other thing: There is a helpful Users Guide on the Help screen, but the instruction to ‘Right-click to view Users Guide’ isn’t complete. A contextual menu appears, then you have to choose ‘Export Field Contents’ and then the Users Guide is exported to your computer desktop, or wherever, in a pdf format.
After that, all is good.
Note: I use it on a Windows 7 Dell laptop.
