This is as realistic an undercover cop thriller as you can get! The author has lived this life and puts his experience into the story. Steve Regan is working as a bar owner in Thailand and is actually an undercover cop. He is trying to hook a large drug dealer in the areas, Les Watkins, with a $50,000 buy on offer to the local Thai mafia groups. Regan has set himself up as bait for the drugs lords.
The book shows you parts of the seedier side of Thailand and the bars that are open for the peculiarities of the older, white, male tourists and their wish for the company of young women and ladyboys. Regan’s Mama-San, Fon is an integral part of the story and helps in lots of different ways. This is not a long book, by any means, but covers a lot of action.
An old nemesis of Regan’s, from his days in the States, is connected to this drugs deal, except it isn’t as simple a case as just drugs. Carlo Vitale is a ruthless Mafioso who has sought refuge in Thailand after ordering his men to carry out three bombings in three different US cities, to target other Mafia bosses and their families. With his involvement, Regan’s chances of success and even survival is now slim.
I hadn’t read the first book in this series and so have gone back and bought that one to see where the Steve Regan character comes from. Who he used to work for and who he works for now and maybe why he does the job he does. Not exactly a safe job, in any format. Lots of insights into the undercover world and what can be involved in a drugs sting, and even what else can so easily be mixed in with criminal deals. Lives and futures can be lost on the flip of a coin.
Very realistic and with a touch of romantic entanglement, but great undercover thriller read. I look forward to some more of the Steve Regan Undercover Cop series in the near future. Great escapism. A short, sharp look at reality in our modern world, in the differences of the underground world hidden from our view, and of our very mundane lives.
I received an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above
